Acne's Worst Enemy Yet: Light Therapy For Acne

Light therapy for acne is the new best friend for many acne sufferers. However this new treatment is only for the most severe forms of acne and not recommended for the average pimple. To use light therapy for acne like whiteheads and blackheads would be too brutal and will do more harm than good. Therefore those with mild forms of acne will be advised to continue eating healthy and wash regularly as before.

According to statistics, as many as one in twenty adults can have severe acne. Severe acne consists of painful and persistent pustules that can leave permanent scarring. Those unlucky enough to develop severe acne find no solution in acne creams or pads. But now they may be able to gain back lost self esteem and have new hope for a clearer complexion with light therapy for acne.

The Workings Of The Light Therapy For Acne

Light therapy for acne uses only red and blue colored light. The red and blue light looks out for the bacteria that cause the severe acne and is used only 15 minutes a day for at least 12 weeks. During these weeks of treatment, you may be prescribed some medications which your doctor expects you to take religiously. For your information, normal white light or sunlight does not work. You must be in or have a colored box that gives off the correct red and blue light for light therapy for acne to work its best.

However colored light therapy for acne is still a controversial issue in treatment. Since their findings which are documented in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2000, many other dermatologists and medical professionals have disregarded the whole idea. They claim the only light therapy for acne that has any use is done with Ultra Violet light.

How About Ultra Violet Light Therapy For Acne?

Ultra Violet light has been commonly used for light therapy for acne. However you should consider this treatment as a last resort because it has been proven that exposure over time to UV light will actually increase the chances of you getting skin cancer. It is also not known to completely cure the acne. In the aftermath of Ultra Violet light therapy for acne treatment, you will not only get wrinkles prematurely, but the acne may return.

However with people who are suffering from severe acne, the benefits seem to out rightly outweigh the risks. Severe acne or stubborn genital acne can be exceedingly painful and leaves the sufferer with no other options to treatment.

The latest member of the family of light treatment for acne is with N-Lite, which is a laser light. However this treatment is so new that it has not gathered enough data, but dermatologists who use laser light therapy for acne say the results show good potential.
